What is BMI Calculator?

With a person's height, weight, and BMI (Body Mass Index), a calculator can determine how much body fat the individual has. One can determine whether they are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese using a straightforward math.

The basis for the BMI calculation is the notion that there is a connection between health and body weight. Adolphe Quetelet, a statistician from Belgium, created it at the beginning of the 19th century, and it has since been widely used as a screening tool to evaluate body weight and health concerns.

The weight in kilos is divided by the square of the height in metres to determine BMI. The number that results is then categorised as follows:

  • BMI 18.5: considered underweight
  • BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 indicates a normal weight
  • Overweight if BMI is between 25 and 29.9
  • Obese: BMI 30 or above

As it ignores elements like muscle mass, bone density, and body composition, BMI is not a great measure of body fatness or health. Athletes with a lot of muscular mass, for instance, may have a high BMI despite not being overweight or obese. Similar to this, elderly persons who have excess body fat may have a lower BMI due to loss of muscle mass.

Conclusion: BMI is a valuable measure for population-level screening and monitoring long-term weight trends despite its drawbacks. Healthcare professionals frequently utilise it to pinpoint patients who might be more vulnerable to weight-related health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and certain malignancies.
